Worsd From a Good Old Man-2

John identified himself as “the elder” in 2 John1 and 3 John 1. By the time he wrote these letters he was surely an old man in terms of years and experience. We have been thinking about some of the words John used in those two little letters. Last week we thought about the word “truth.” This week we turn to the word “commandment” which we find in 2 John 4-6.

Notice how John ties the word commandment to the concept of love. “And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. This is love, that we walk according to His commandments” (2 John 5-6a NKJV). Love is the greatest thing said the apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 13:13). And as John said, God is love (1 John 4:8). But he makes it plain here that love is not just an emotion. The word John uses is familiar as that unique Christian love that prefers others over self (agape) as exemplified in Romans 5:6-8). Love demands sacrifice.

Here John ties love to “commandment” a word that has in it the idea of an ordinance that must be obeyed. Christians are compelled by God Himself to love one another (John 13:34). As the Lord Himself obeyed the Father’s will we must bend our wills to His in all aspects of life. In so doing we walk as that good old man John said we should walk.
